The Mary Garden

Flower Symbols of the Mary Garden

Baby's Breath symbolizes innocence and purity; also the breath of the Holy Spirit.

Carnations / Pinks - pink or red color symbolizes love, life, crucifixion, "love unto death. The name "carnation" suggests the Incarnation of Christ.

Blue Columbines circlet of petals thought to resemble doves.  A symbol of fidelity, often appears in paintings of Mary.

Columbine symbol of the dove of the Holy Spirit.

Daisy "Mary's Flower of God" (Jesus)

Everlasting symbol of Mary's eternal loving mediation in heaven.

Gladiolus -Sword-shaped leaves symbolize "piercing sorrows"; also martyrdom especially red gladiolus.

Iris/flag/sword lily):  Deep-blue color symbolizes Mary's fidelity, and the blade-shaped foliage denotes the sorrows that "pierce her heart".
Ivy (evergreen): The ivy stands for eternity, faithfulness.

Lilies (Easter or Madonna lilies and lilies-of-the-valley) -- white color and sweet fragrance symbolize Mary's purity, humility, loving obedience to God's will. White "Annunciation Lily", symbol of Mary's Immaculate Purity.

Marigold (calendula, pot marigold, French marigold): Mary's gold" symbolize her simplicity, domesticity. Marigold also connected to Mary's sorrows, its strong scent was associated with burial ointments.

Strawberry "Fruitful Virgin", in flower and fruit at the same time.

Many of our culinary and fragrant herbs were grown in monastery gardens or used by missionaries.

A cloister garden with a border or edge that sets the garden apart.

Use a statue or shrine of Our Lady, a Crucifix, a pool, etc., to give a central focus.

Provide a quiet space and a bench for meditation

In France during the 7th century, the first garden dedicated to the Blessed Mother was by St. Fiacre, the Irish patron saint of gardening.
