Thanks to reader Karen for this harrowing story so We can get out the word. Pet/Plant Danger warning! /Purple Fountain Grass” though PFG is technically not “toxic” if ingested – it poses a HUGE threat to all animals if the debris (dried seeds) enter the dog’s body threough the eyes, ears, nose or skin (paw).  This plant can migrate to the lungs and brain and kill the animal.  It’s “barbed” seeds attach to the membranes of animals and migrates to pose huge risks.  An animal would need immediate vet care to be sedated and have the plant particle surgically removed..  Please note, Purple Fountain Grass (PFG) is ALSO considered a “foxtail” grass plant by insiders and vets.  All grass plants with these barbed seeds and “foxtail like appearance from bushy ends” are nicknamed foxtails.  PFG sent my dog and a neighbors cat directly to the emergency for surgery.  My dog inhaled it when sniffing around the bush and the plant entered the cat’s body through it’s paw and migrated to his lung nearly taking his life after the lung filled with pus from infection – which is the danger PFG poses.  My dog cracked his cheek bone while slamming his face to the ground and violently sneezing trying to remove the Purple Fountain Grass that immediately attached to the membrane inside the nose there is a handful of grass plants that pose this danger and THAT danger is a threat because nicknaming them all “foxtails” doesn’t tell the public which plants are actually a danger.  Purple Fountain Grass IS one such plant.
